A Feast for the Senses

Feast for the Senses

You do more than merely meet nutritional goals when you pack lunches that have great sense appeal.

With a power-packed lunch that appeals to all the senses you can fight the seasonal blues, supercharge your immune system, and see to it that your kids finish every last little bite.

That's a lot packed into one Bentology bento.

One. The sense of sight. They say our brains take the vast majority of the information we process in through our eyes. Feed it something colorful, beautiful and delightful.

If you were a kid, wouldn't you love to eat this?

This is a quick and easy lunch to prep when you use your Bentology bento.

Two. Scent. To uplift the spirits in the darker months, work a beloved scent into your daily routine. Order soaps in your favorite scent or beloved brand now to last through springtime.

In your lunches, pack powerfully fragrant scents, like the aromatic Asian pear pictured above. Go for anything that makes you feel good when you smell it: cut navel oranges, leaves of fragrant plants like rosemary, basil, parsley, certain trail mix combos and—maybe for your own lunch—chocolate covered coffee beans!

Three and Four. The crunch of nuts and seeds, a bite into a crisp apple, a snap of a fresh cracker, these things all feed the senses of hearing and touch.

Five. Taste. The power of this one goes without saying. Go for great taste by buying organic whenever you can, by washing everything carefully in a fruit and veggie wash, and by very lightly cooking food to maintain its freshness as much as possible.

Did you know: Researchers in Japan early in the last century discovered that we possess a fifth taste, after sweet, salty, bitter, and sour? Indeed, one that some call the fifth taste is also called "umami," or good taste, and it is appreciated when we enjoy the flavors in miso, mushrooms, parmesan cheese, soy sauce, and other fermented foods.

Enrich your children's lunches—and your own—by keeping the senses in mind. It's a great way to stay healthy on short, chilly days during dark months.

Enjoy your good sense. You've earned it.
